The project “Working Together for Freedom of Information in Ecuador”, carried out by FUNDAMEDIOS and FERRERE Abogados, was granted the TrustLaw award for best collaborative work 2020.
This award recognizes the impact of a joint effort of probono lawyers and social organizations from legal teams from Ecuador, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.
The collaborative work allowed is to published the report «Comparative Analysis of Access to Information», which contains best regional practices and the application of the regulations on this fundamental right.
During the process, dialogue tables and regional forums took place. Experts of different counties of Latin America discussed the minimum requirements that the regulations have to meet, especially in regards of the autonomy and independence of the Governing Body for Access to Public information.
These inputs allowed the construction of the draft for the Organic Law on Access to Public Information for Ecuador. The document was delivered to the Multiparty Assembly of Members for Transparency and Access to Information, on August 7 2020.
FUNDAMEDIOS receives this recognition with satisfaction and gratitude towards TrustLaw, as well as to Ferrere Abogados, the partner that coordinated the Latin American law firms that participated in the project. We are also grateful to all the law firms in five different countries that provided their insights for the success of this project. This award strengthens FUNDAMEDIOS´ commitment to ensure freedom of expression and our work with organizations all over the Americas.
Finally, we hope that the delivered draft of the Organic Law on Access to Public Information, which is being discussed at the National Assembly, will allow us to soon have an approved legislation in accordance with constitutional provisions and international Human Rights standards.
