Ante la reciente detención del fundador de Wikileaks, Julian Assange, una vez que el estado ecuatoriano le retiró la condición de asilado en la Embajada de Ecuador en Londres, FUNDAMEDIOS manifiesta lo siguiente:
Como institución comprometida con la libertad de expresión, el acceso a la información, la libertad de prensa , la seguridad de periodistas, así como protección de sus fuentes, reiteramos nuestro apoyo al periodismo investigativo y a la protección de los denunciantes (whistelblowers) a quienes entendemos como aquellas personas que, a pesar de tener un compromiso de responsabilidad profesional hacia su institución estatal o privada, están dispuestos a denunciar hechos y a hacer pública información cuando encuentren actos deshonestos, inmorales o ilegales y que atenten contra el interés común. Con esto contribuyen a fortalecer la transparencia, una ciudadanía informada y consciente, y la democracia.
Se conoce que el Departamento de Justicia de los Estados Unidos ha iniciado una solicitud de extradición para procesar a Assange por “conspiración para cometer una intrusión informática en la Red del Departamento de Defensa de los Estados Unidos”.
En este sentido, “si el caso fuera que se acuse al señor Assange por el hecho de haber puesto en conocimiento del público una cantidad considerable de información oficial que recibiera directamente de un denunciante, Fundamedios reiteraría su defensa de la libertad de expresión y del acceso a la información y de la libertad de periodistas, así como de utilizar todas las fuentes a su alcance para cumplir legítimamente su función”, aseguró César Ricaurte Presidente de Fundamedios.
Fundamedios demands the respect to freedom of expression and related rights in the Assange Case
Given the recent arrest of Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, after leaving the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where his asylum has been withdrawn by the Ecuadorian Government:
FUNDAMEDIOS, as a press organization, reiterates its committed toward Freedom of Expression, Access to Information, Freedom of the Press, safety of Journalists, as well as protection of sources. We also reaffirm our support and commitment to investigative journalism and the protection of whistleblowers, who are individuals that are willing, beyond their institutional commitment, to denounce actions from their institution, private or state, when they discover an action that is dishonest, illegitimate or illegal, that endanger the rights of others. With this action they help to strengthen transparency, informed citizenship, and democracy.
The Justice Department of the United States has initiated a request to extradite Mr. Assange to stand trial in the USA for conspiracy to commit an intrusion in the Network of the Department of Defense of the United States.
